Globally, health promotion has emerged as a viable tool for comprehensive and equitable health and social development, recognising the importance of sustained activities that promote public and individual health, as well as the need for continuous community engagement. Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health so as to reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being According to the Minister of Ministry of Health-Dr. Ruth Acheng, “In Uganda, 75% of our disease burden is preventable which means to have a healthy population we may not need hospitals that much because, as we all know, clinical care is a bottomless pit which we will never fill.” As defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), health promotion aims at empowering people to make own decisions that improve their health.
FOTI will put its attention on the three key spheres of health care promotion namely health protection, health prevention and health education and specific activities under this program will be directed to family planning for population control, malaria prevention and control, HIV/AIDS prevention, Care & Treatment, nutrition and safe water and environmental sanitation. HIV/Aids prevalence rate in Kabarole District is still high at 10 per cent, which is higher than the national rate of 6.1 per cent.
FOTI will work with Ministry of Health of Uganda, Tooro Kingdom and other partners to ensure effective implementation of the three (3) core spheres of health care promotion. A strong and effective media strategy and capacity building strategy will be developed and fully integrated in the entire Health Care Promotion Program.
VHTs and other community structures will be central in the implementation of the FOTI Health Care Promotion Program.
